Going PINK: Exploring His Feminine Side

Dani: By the way, I brought you a pink tee shirt from home to wear for a "Breast Cancer Awareness" photo for our blog.
TL:  Is it big enough for me?
Dani: I think so.
TL: Well, alright then. Go get it...
Will it look okay over my shirt?
Dani: I think it will be fine...
So, you don't mind wearing pink, ha?
TL: No, I will just be getting in touch with my feminine side.

After their photo was taken, TL Givens and Dani Berrong sat in their shared office discussing breast cancer.  From TL's sister-in-law's recent biopsy to Angelina Jolie's decision to have a double mastectomy, they had a serious discussion.
Awareness is half the battle!

from

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help!

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
When breast cancer is detected early (localized stage), the 5-year survival rate is 98%.

Beyond The Shock is a free, comprehensive, online guide to understanding breast cancer. It is a resource for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, a place for loved ones to gain a better understanding of the disease, and a tool for doctors to share information.

WHAT IS CANCER?

Breast cancer is a group of cancer cells (malignant tumor) that starts in the cells of the breast.

BREAST CANCER FACTS

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.

ABOUT MALE BREAST CANCER

All people, whether male or female, are born with some breast cells and tissue that have the possibility to develop into cancer.  However, breast cancer in men is rare, with only about 2,190 diagnoses each year.

CAUSES OF BREAST CANCER

Although most people who develop breast cancer will not be able to pinpoint one specific cause,  scientists have learned much about risk factors that may indicate a stronger likelihood for cancer. Learn about the myths and factors that may apply to you.

TYPES OF TUMORS

Breast cancer tumors can be categorized by the size, type of cells, and the characteristics that fuel its growth. Learn more about benign tumors,  malignant tumors, and classification.

BREAST ANATOMY

To understand breast cancer and its treatment options, it helps to know the anatomy of the breast and surrounding tissue. Learn more about the ducts, glands, and lymph system and how each is important for cancer development and treatment.

GROWTH OF CANCER

How does cancer spread into the nearby breast tissue? What happens to cause cancer to spread to other organs? Learn what you need to know about the growth of cancer and the possible measures to stop it.

RISK FACTORS

Some cancer risk factors – like smoking – are controllable.  Some other cancer risk factors –like genetics – are not.  Find out more about potential risk factors and how you can plan for your healthiest life.

A Good Cause

The Givens Group went out on Friday, September 13th, to the Players Club of Henderson for a charitable golf scramble to support finding the cure for childhood cancer.

 As you may know,

September is
"Childhood Cancer Awareness Month"!

In September of 2012,
a remarkable, world-wide
Thumbs Up Movement
began as a way to honor
Lane Goodwin
and the positive attitude
he maintained during his 2 1/2 year
battle with Rhabdomyosarcoma.
The movement brought global awareness
to childhood cancers
(the leading cause of death by disease
for children under the age of 15).
Approximately 36 children and adolescences
are diagnosed with cancer every day.
Yet, research for childhood cancers
remain underfunded.
Lane believed that the awareness
that the
Thumbs Up Movement
brought to childhood cancer
would lead to a cure.
remains committed
to fulfilling Lane's mission.

Keep Proud and Carry On!

(Terry Kellen)

This morning I sent Scott a text:
Did y'all give Terry a hero's welcome when he came in?

Scott responded:
Yes!  Then I told him to get to work, ha.

On Wednesday night we heard several emergency vehicles racing to the south end of town.  By news-time that night we knew there had been a very serious, one-car wreck just south of us in the county.  We also knew that a person had been pulled from a burning vehicle and life-flighted away from the scene.

What we didn't know was that one of our very own, Terry Kellen, was one of two heroes who stopped and pulled the critically injured driver from the burning wreckage.  In true Terry fashion, he never said a word.  It was not until late, last night when the Gleaner updated the report that we learned the name of the victim and one of his rescuers:

You can read the article, HERE.

We are so proud of you, Terry!
Now get to work!
